Mulberry Place
A new house for a new beginning. A mid terraced, eighteen hundreds cottage located within the conservation catchment of the Fullers Brewery, Hammersmith, London.
The client acquired a property that required substantial refurbishment and a renewed design strategy. In response, Scoot / Studio focused on resolving spatial limitations and addressing the lack of natural light at the core of the home.
To enhance illumination within the newly configured ground-floor living and kitchen areas, glazed ceiling panels were introduced. These elements allowed daylight to cascade from strategically positioned roof lights above, through glazed floor lights that cultivated a brighter and more inviting interior environment at ground-floor.
The revised spatial arrangement necessitated relocating the bathroom to the first floor, situated within the newly extended portion of the property. The external façade was developed in strict accordance with conservation guidelines, resulting in a perforated brick elevation that discreetly concealed the bathroom window.
Given the compact footprint and the client’s aspiration to establish a stronger connection between garden and interior, subtle yet impactful design interventions were employed. Full-height bi-fold doors created a seamless threshold between the courtyard and kitchen, while a bespoke front door, designed to echo the proportions of the original sash windows, enabled partial opening of the façade when desired.
London stock brickwork was thoughtfully integrated throughout the interior, appearing in walls, flooring, hearth, and patio. This cohesive material strategy reinforced the architectural language and unified the overall scheme.
